Trauma occurs when a person has experienced a dramatic, stressful incident, that has profound impact on everyday functioning and psychological well-being. A sudden, unexpected situation occurs, and destabilises a persons’ ability to cope. Accidents, injury, prolonged illness, natural disasters or death can manifest as traumatic events for many people. Trauma counselling involves the slow process of revisiting the dramatic event. This can sometimes be a painful experience for the client, however learning to resolve the overwhelming feelings and memories that have been avoided, is the first step in healing the psychological wound caused by trauma. Trauma counselling changes a victim into a thriving survivor.
