Disability can be loosely defined as a condition that restricts a person’s mobility, sensory or mental processes. A disability is usually caused by trauma, accident, disease or genetics. Some individuals may have more than one disability to cope with, and many suffer the added trauma of stereotyping and stigma associated with a condition. An individual’s disability is very specific to that person. One label does not fit all. At Greengate Consultants we ignore the ‘dis’ and work with the ability in all our clients. Using creative approaches, (“talk therapy”, drawing, music, sand and drama) gives each client the space to communicate at a comfortable pace. For example, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), used in conjunction with mindfulness techniques, has had successful results for improving skills for those with limited cognitive abilities. Every client is an individual, and is counselled with the method considered most appropriate for addressing personal issues.
